A year's training in Christian evangelism & social work in the city of Birmingham

Urban Challenge is a one-year training course run by BCM since 1972.

It's all about hands-on experience in urban mission.

The city is a challenge; the work we do is a challenge; and there are many personal challenges to deal with on the way.

Who is UC for?

Committed Christians aged 18 and over,  who want to serve God during a gap year or want broad practical experience before or after theological training. It is also suitable for those wanting to test a calling to Christian work. We will interview suitable applicants and will normally take up to ten people a year.

When does UC start and finish?

It runs from September to July, with mid-term breaks and main holidays.

What is our goal?

As a Mission we want to reach as many people as possible with the Gospel, but our main aim for everyone taking up this 'Urban Challenge' is that their spiritual life will be deepened. We are sure, also, that their faith and trust in God will be strengthened and that their gifts will be discovered and developed. There are regular times for prayer, worship and teaching; a special mid-winter retreat; and pastoral support throughout the year.
